Today I am going to show you how to make your own sugar pearls, perfect for cake or cupcake decoration.
Making your own sugar pearls is easy, and they’re as beautiful as any shop bought varieties. They also make a lovely gift for a friend.
I love the simplicity of a cupcake with a simple swirl of frosting on top.
But every now and then I like something a little extra, such as pastel colored sugar pearls on top of the frosting.
Beautiful fondant pearls
- fondant sugar paste (or use white marzipan if you prefer)
- Wilton food colorings
- CMC/tylose powder, to make the pearls harder (optional)
- a pearl mold (you can make the peals by hand, but a mold makes it easier to make them the same size)
- pearl powder
Knead a tiny drop of food coloring into the fondant sugar paste (or white marzipan).
Add 1-2 teaspoons of the CMC/tylose powder for 14 oz. (400 grams) of fondant/marzipan.
Press the fondant or marzipan into the pearl mold, then place in the freezer for 2 minutes.
Turn the mold upside-down to release the pearls.
If you don’t have a mold just use your hands to make small pearls. Apply some Crisco to your palms to prevent the fondant/marzipan from sticking.
Dust with some pearl powder to add some luster to the pearls.
Store in a nice container or box…
